The measurement of carbon stocks in the Avoided Conversion Cerrado REDD Program assess three carbon pools: above-ground biomass, below-ground biomass and, soil organic carbon (SOC). Three variables were used to estimate the soil carbon content: bulk density, organic carbon content and soil depth. The samples were collected by digging until 30 cm of soil at the stipulated points, and the samples were sent to a specialized laboratory for analysis of the main components. For each sampling point, the corresponding carbon stock was calculated using the equation from Veldkamp, 1994.ERA launched the REDD Cerrado Program to avoid the planned, legal deforestation of the Brazil's second largest biome, Cerrado biome. The Avoided Conversion Cerrado Program was launched as a grouped project to provide an alternative for landholders with surplus native vegetation to receive payments for conservation by leveraging the voluntary carbon market.
